Airfield Incursion Light Installation 

Work included: 

Ground Penetrating Radar Survey (GPR) by Specialist Contractor to locate existing airfield services. 
Break out 6no. existing concrete pads & dispose of spoils off site. Backfill voids with topsoil & spoils generated on-site by other excavations & seed. 
Excavate & construct 6no. new concrete pads, in agreed new locations. 
Carefully expose the existing power cables, excavate trench, lift & relay cables to new positions. 
Disconnection of existing light units & redundant equipment & disposal off site. 
Install & fix 12no. LED Traffic Light units on existing concrete pads. 
Install & fix 6no. LED Traffic Light units on newly formed concrete pads, in new locations. 
Specialist airfield M&E sub-contractor installed additional cabling & jointing. 
Undertake MCS Test & commissioning, Traffic Light Control Test & commissioning from Air Traffic Control (ATC). 
Removal of existing carriageway hold markings & lay new thermoplastic markings. 
Provide an O&M Manual.

Innovation: 

The scheme was agreed to be bespoke for RNAS Yeovilton with many of the newly installed lights being mounted on frangible posts to ensure clear visibility. 
 
BPM recommended moving the new incursion lights closer to the sides of the carriageways, as it was suggested that the height, combined with the distance was contributing to the failure to view them by passing motorists.
